Teeth Whitening

When most people think of tooth color, they think “white.” This is ideal, but everyday life makes white teeth nearly impossible to achieve without help from your dentist.

Why Are My Teeth Discolored?

Teeth discoloration happens for several reasons, some of which are beyond your control. Food and drink are the main culprits. Coffee, tea, and red wine are well-known for their chromogens, or intense color pigments, that attach to enamel and stain teeth. Certain sauces, such as marinara, and even fruit juices or fruit punch can dull your smile.

Tobacco is a major cause of teeth stains because of the tar and nicotine found in cigarettes, cigars, and chewing tobaccos. When nicotine mixes with oxygen, it turns yellowish, and the color appears on your teeth as stains.

The dark tar in tobacco can even turn your teeth brown or black. Patients are encouraged not to smoke or chew tobacco to avoid this and other more severe dental issues.

As you age, your teeth will undergo more wear and tear, which discolors them. Medications, especially antihistamines, blood pressure medications, and chemotherapy, may discolor your teeth as well.
